ST.AGNES

This is surf city!  Surfers Paradise in Queensland has nothing like this.  Frenzy is not a word used much around here.  People are either chilling out in the pubs or in the sea.

Brewery – Brew Pub

Real Ales – Cuckoo Ale (brewed on premises) plus Sharps Own, HSD and others.

Food  - Very Good

This pub is situated in Trevaunance Cove.  The building dates back to the 17th Century and recently became a brewpub, but its single real ale, Cuckoo was not available when I visited.  Apparently the symbol of St Agnes is the Cuckoo and people from St Agnes are called Cuckoos.  (A mate of mine who lives there told me this.  Really!)  On the ground floor there is a bar for children with a pool table and fruit machines.  Downstairs is more of a drinker’s bar and upstairs a wood beamed bar, which was quieter and next to the restaurant.  There is a nice collection of Single Malt Whisky’s lurking in the pub.  Good value carvery on a Sunday.  During my previous visit there were children running around with steak knives.  Funny how things like this stick in the mind!

The granite built hotel is in the heart of the village.  One large bar with a nautical theme to the left as you enter.  Useful if you want to stay in the village.  Stu 7/10  Dec 2000

Pub with friendly bar staff and atmosphere. Done out in a nautical theme, with wood panelling and ship pictures. A roaring fire adds to the atmosphere of this lovely pub. A model ship in a case is outside as you walk out.

Large bar with raised seating area at the end. No sea view sadly, but a pretty town. Nautical theme, with shipwrecks, ships wheel and barrel tables.  Nice friendly atmosphere and knowledgeable barman. Bar has ships rope as edging.  Sue Dec 2000

ST.AUSTELL

This town is picking up after 30 years of decline.  The deterioration was brought about by cuts in the China Clay industry, however the nearby Eden Project is pulling them in.  The Millenium Dome could learn something here!  By the way Eden did not hold an embarrassing New Years Eve party.  You can catch buses to it from the town, although the project does not sell real ale.

Irish pub with the feeling of someone’s house,  with cubby holes and nooks and crannies.  Lively, pleasant atmosphere.  Music possibly a little loud.  Nice laid back pub.   Sue Sept 1997

St Austell brewery’s only Irish theme pub – Thank god.  It used to be called the Sun and was in the GBG, but was changed to its present state in the mid 1990’s.  If St Austell did a stout I could understand it.  Not one of my favourite St Austell pubs.  Stu 5/10  1997

As someone who’s doing the St Austell passport, this pub stands out for being a bit different because it’s a Irish theme pub.  If you like to know what I think of Irish theme pubs, read the notes for Macnamarras Roundhouse in Truro.  On the plus side they do have handpumped beer and a good atmosphere.  Maybe St Austells thought it was a good idea to have a Irish theme pub to tie into their nitokeg beer Celtic Smooth !?!?  John 6/10

Named after the man who discovered Kaolin (China Clay) for porcelain making. John Keay house, the home of the china clay industry is nearby.  This is an unusual modern pub built in 1969 to the North of the town.  A long walk is rewarded by a different sort of pub.  One large modern bar and one more intimate to the rear. This pub is deceptive.  It looks so big from the outside yet is fairly small inside.  Just a single bar.  Bit of a Tardis!.  The interior is loungey but a relaxing place on a Sunday afternoon. The unusual pub sign shows the landowners the pub was named after.  One side of the sign shows a ring on one of their fingers but the other side does not.  Apparently, this chap lost it in a gamble.  Stu 7/10  1997

Roadside pub  which looks big on the outside. Standard St Austells decor inside and a bit of a dead atmosphere. ( A bit like the Moon ). Highlight was some joker trying to make us drink up in the middle of the afternoon, but we told him we go when the regulars did.  John 6/10 Nov 98

This is a typical touristy pub and it is only open during the Summer months.  It’s right by the harbour and is obviously aimed at the visitors.  There are big windows overlooking the beach, done up recently and friendly enough.  Also helped by the great company which we had that day!  You don’t pronounce Donner Kebab like doner as in blood doner. Gail?!  Stu 7.5/10 May 2001

Considering the situation of this pub on the harbour side it is a CRIMINAL waste that more has not been made of it! The décor is bland, gaudy and unappealing and there are foul-mouthed drunks in it!  (Stu and John?)

(Sues thoughts after the bad service on the same day!)

Had to wait one and a half hours for a meal to be served while a 'locals' party of 20 odd people served first- ordered last. Complained and were ignored by management who were quite rude. Reasonable but quiet hotel bar accessed by granite steps - don’t fall over going out.  Dark inside and a bit like someone’s lounge, but friendly enough.    Stu 6/10 1996

A pleasant pub with plush green upholstery. Unfortunately, TV intrudes into the lounge bar area. Paintings rather tacky too!  Sue Sept 1996

Close to the Wellington hotel and yet another granite pub.  The St. Just residents are so lucky, this one caters more for families.    Stu 8/10 1998

Nice old place. Very cosy atmosphere, with features like fireplace, low beams, stone floor etc. Finished the evening in a nice comfortable chair. The St Austell’s drayman must have a easy time delivering in St Just, with 3 pubs within a 100 yards of each other.  John  8/10 Aug 97

An attractive pub with dark timbered furniture and a sweet cornish cat as fixtures! Low beams above the bar and a traditional fireplace.  Again, nice plants in the ladies! Liked the stone and plaster walls. Maybe a little food orientated.   Sue Aug 1996

This is the reason for living!  The words sober and Star Inn rarely occur in one sentence.  This low set pub with wonderful beer and company is the oldest in the village.  As you go in, turn to the left for the bar.  Don’t trip over the dog.  Obviously the accountants have not got their hands on this one yet.  Stu 9.5/10 1998

I can't really add much more too Stuart and Sues excellent reviews. Except to say, the moment you step into this place you know its a classic pub.  John 9.5/10 Aug 97

My first 10 (St Austell pubs) and very well deserved! One of the loveliest beer gardens I have seen as well as a real feeling of the pub being part of the local community and its history. The landlady told us a lot of the local history and was very friendly and informative. The bar made you feel at home instantly and relaxed. The dimly lit interior was beautiful with a low wood planked ceiling, traditional pub games, local maps, traditional ornaments, the sloped ceiling dating back to the 1300s and a beautiful Ladies! Full of plants only a FEW of the attractions.

Good hotel by the market square.   You can often park outside this large granite building.  It has a good reputation for food.   Stu 8/10 1998

To be fair to this pub after visiting the Star Inn, the next pub will be a little like’ after the lord mayors show',but this was above average. Visit on a summers evening the place was full of Parents and their children. I have nothing against families in pubs, but we seem to be a little out of place being the only people without children! Feel a little like a Macdonalds, good pubs need a balance of people. Like to visit the pub again in the winter to see how different it is.  John 7/10 Aug 97

A pleasant pub divided into several ares.  Rather "food and children" orientated but nicely decorated with plum coloured pillars and cream and brown furnishings.  Sue Aug 1996

I’m not usually impressive by pubs with flowers (unlike some people and mice), but this pub does stand out. Traditional on the outside  and traditional on the inside with beer serve straight from the barrel. Strange old furniture, which adds to the atmosphere. A classic old inn.  John 9/10

A very beautiful beer garden, which as understandably won awards. Palm trees, honeysuckle and huge tubs of flowering plants make it a gardeners dream.  Inside is extremely old, with original fireplace attractive dark wood furniture and strange collection of objects-apart from water jugs there were shoes, a fireman helmet, several strange metal objects! and a foxs tail, which I found off-putting. All in all, very pretty though.  Sue Aug 1997

To find it aim for the church!  The car park is opposite and has the odd goat wandering around?  It’s a superb 15th Century pub.  Stone walls and floor and very popular in the summer.  Good food and real ale.

St.Mawes lies across Carrick Roads from Falmouth and has a twin of its castle.  This is a lovely seaside village with several expensive hotels. This pub is situated by the main public car park in the town, opposite the Idle Rocks Hotel (no real ale but nice balcony).  During the summer it has its share of ‘Yachties’ in the bar.  I find it best out of season.  The restaurant is posh, but I don’t think it’s particularly good value.  Stick with the excellent bar food.  Beer is pretty good and service prompt.  Outside the front is a large patio, ideal for watching the world go by.  Stu 8/10 Feb 2002

Pub in a good harbourside location in St Mawes. Pub is a little bit of a let down inside, looks like the furniture has been around a long time! This works in some pubs but not this one. Pleasant atmosphere and good beer.

John 7/10 Sept 97

I'm a little prejudiced here, as I love St Mawes! The Rising Sun is set back slightly from the Harbour wall but with good views of town and harbour. Bar possibly a little under-decorated the woodwork looked a little too weathered and some brighter paint might have been nicer. But very good friendly atmosphere (friendly dog too!).Nice old-fashioned fireplace, with open fire.  Sue Sept 1997

Nice hotel by the Harbour.   Although less posh than the nearby Tresanton, it does have a real ale bar.  There is a staircase in the bar which leads to the Hotel proper from where you can have an afternoon tea on the balcony; which has great views.  In the Summer it can get very busy, but on a Winters afternoon its relaxing.  The bar staff could do with a lesson on how to be more friendly though.  Maybe working on a Sunday afternoon is just too much for them?  You can often park on the quay opposite.   Stu 8/10 Feb 2002

Modern airy pub with views of the harbour from across the road.  Green and white decor with wooden floor. Impressive modern wooden staircase. Beer range seems to be strong on Skinners. Food is expensive.

It’s difficult to split this one from the Rising Sun.  Good real ale but I prefer the food here – reputation for high class (ie. expensive) seafood.  Its gone way up market in the food department and its too pricy.  How is it the French can do better food cheaper? Drinkers to the left and food to the right.  It gets very busy in the summer, as it’s very close to the harbour.  There is a tiny outside seating area.           Stu 8/10 Sept 2003

Low beamed pub done out in a maritime theme, to please the tourist. This said it is not unpleasant. Half the pub is for eating, and other half for drinking. Pub has a nice relaxed atmosphere about it. Some nice old black
and white photos on the wall. Nice pint here.  John 8/10 visit Sept 2003

A lovely old pub in a nice village situated near Cornwall’s main Airport.  Well its runway is longer than Heathrow’s and it can accommodate ANY size plane! Drinking area around the bar and a restaurant area at the back.  It can get packed in the summer so beware!  But it deserves the trade as it serves good beer and food and its rather nice inside too.  There is a small beer garden outside.  Stu 8/10 Dec 2000

Picturesque village, Post Office, church and of course a pub.  Nice granite frontage with a big beer garden and nice seats outside. Inside was a little too modern, you except to see low ceiling and beams instead you get wooden tables and red decor.  Still a lovely place with a nice fire in the winter. Pub has accommodation must be a nice place to stay.  John 9/10 Dec 2000

Turn off the A30 at Scorrier and near to the Crossroads Motel (I’m not joking) on the Chacewater – Redruth road is this super little pub.  There is plenty of parking outside.  Converted many years ago from a terrace of houses, one of which was an alehouse.  Another was the pay house for the nearby Scorrier Estate, which is owned by the Williams family. The food served here has been renowned for years.  This high standard started with the previous landlord David Halfpenny and it has been maintained by the new one.  There are two drinking areas set around a small bar and a narrow eating section.  Stu 8/10 Dec 2000

Good pub in nice village. Very crowded when we visited which added to a lively atmosphere. Ended up in the conservatory area with the plants! Beer was first class when we visited.  John 8/10 Nov 98

A little difficult to judge, as a large function was going on but the conservatory area was very pretty, with large Swiss cheese plants, umbrella plants and begonias.
